LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – Carnegie Hall invites community members, craft enthusiasts, and aspiring makers to join Crossbody Purses, a hands‑on Appalachian Heritage workshop led by regional leather artisan Luke Davis, on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This immersive class offers participants the opportunity to design and construct a structured, hard‑shell leather crossbody bag—an elegant, functional accessory that can become a wardrobe staple or a meaningful handmade gift.
Students will choose from a selection of richly colored and patterned leather before learning the foundational techniques needed to shape, assemble, and finish their custom bag. All materials are provided, and while prior leatherworking experience is helpful, it is not required. The workshop is open to ages 14 and older and limited to 8 participants to ensure personalized instruction and a supportive creative environment.
Instructor Luke Davis brings a growing reputation for accessible, high‑quality leather craft instruction. His recent Appalachian Heritage workshops at Carnegie Hall—including custom leather belts and cell phone cases—have introduced students of all ages to essential skills such as pattern creation, cutting, tooling, and finishing. His teaching emphasizes both craftsmanship and confidence-building, making traditional leatherwork approachable for beginners while offering depth for returning students.
Registration for the Crossbody Purses workshop is $155 for members and $175 for nonmembers. With limited seating and strong community interest in Davis’s classes, early registration is encouraged.
Carnegie Hall is proud to continue its Appalachian Heritage Craft series, celebrating the region’s enduring traditions through hands‑on learning, artistry, and community connection.
