MARLINTON W.Va. (WVDN) – The Greenbrier River Trail Association is proud to announce the 40th Anniversary of the Great Greenbrier River Race, a cherished triathlon event bringing together the local community, athletes, and supporters. This milestone celebration honors the enduring spirit of the Greenbrier River Trail and the dedicated efforts to maintain and enhance its amenities for everyone.

The 40th Great Greenbrier River Race will take place on Saturday, April 25, with participants competing in a triathlon format. It is not too late to register for this unique triathlon that you can experience as an individual or a team (of up to four). This family-friendly event is a run, boat, and bike triathlon in scenic Pocahontas County on the Greenbrier River and Greenbrier River Trail (GRT).

The race starts and ends in Marlinton, with a 3-mile run, down Second Avenue and then north on the GRT for an out-and-back course.  The race then continues through a transition zone into the river via kayak or canoe for four miles downstream.  The final leg of the race is a 10-mile bike ride, starting by heading south on the GRT, then turning back and heading north, finishing back in Marlinton.

The day begins with race packet pickup at Marlinton Presbyterian Church, available Friday, April 24, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 25, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Racers are invited to join the Pre-Race Warmup and Meeting at Gazebo Park at 10:30 a.m. The race will officially start at 11 a.m.

The PreParty on Friday, April 24, kicks off the weekend from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Mountain Tavern in Marlinton. Sponsored by Old Spruce Brewery, Greenbrier Bikes, Trailhead Pizza, and Mountain Tavern, this evening features Happy Hour with live music by Nathan Seldomridge.

Racers will enjoy lunch provided by Amy’s Cakes and Cones and Old Red Mill Taphouse Grille of Lewisburg. The awards ceremony will honor top finishers, and music by the Sodapop Gypies will be provided throughout the day to keep the celebration going.

The Greenbrier River Race is made possible through the generosity of event sponsors, donors, and community partners. A special shout-out to major cash donors, including the Great Greenbrier River Marathon, Forren Soil, Jaensson’s Law Firm, Cindy Chesler, Greenbrier Automotive Group, and Dunmore Admiral, LLC. All proceeds directly support the maintenance and improvement of the Greenbrier River Trail’s amenities. For a complete list of sponsors and more information, please visit the Greenbrier River Trail Association webpage or the Race Registration webpage.

Organizers said, “We invite the community, racers, and supporters to join in celebrating 40 years of the Great Greenbrier River Race. Your participation and support help preserve the Greenbrier River Trail for future generations. Mark your calendars and be a part of this landmark event!”
