Gang Broken Up

With five of its six members in custody, a gang of moonshiners, said to have been one of the worst in the state in recent times has been broken up. Five miles from any habitation, in a river cannon on Beech Run, with Swiss the nearest village, they had erected a house of drift lumber In this isolated nook, with the rock cliffs serving as sentinel posts, the gang lived. These men had lived so long in the woods, that they had begun to look like wild men, say the arresting officers. To leave their cabin to make any sort of journey they had to cross Gauley River and they kept a boat for this purpose. For this reason and because of the character of the country, it was almost impossible to trail the men to their lair.

Greenbrier High School News

The sturdy sons of Greenbrier High School overwhelmed Talcott High in a one-sided battle on last Saturday by a score of 55-4. The Greenbrier boys started the fray with a bang and kept up such a continual bombardment at the baskets that Coach Johnson, fearing that the strain might play havoc with the baskets, called in his muskleteers and mustetred out his “second team,” which proved equally their match.

Cadets Enjoy Big Season

When Coach Cameron’s fighting cadet eleven downed Charleston High 13-0 on Turkey Day in the capital city the Greenbrier Military School boys completed a very successful football season. Snowshoe Goes Up For Sale Monday

The year-old Snowshoe ski resort in Pocahontas County will be for sale next Monday. H. Nickell Kramer, circuit court judge for Pocahontas and Greenbrier counties, approved the sale Monday. It will be held at the courthouse in Marlinton. Charleston National Bank, chief creditor for the resort, had requested the sale after financial problems halted development of the mountaintop complex.

Sodium Nitrite In Bacon

In mid-October, after a long tough battle, the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture announced plans to force the nation’s meat packers to remove a cancer-causing agent from bacon or stop selling it. The decision was based on an 18-month study of the effects of sodium nitrite, used in hot dogs, ham, corned beef, along with bacon, which many scoffed-at health authorities have warned against for years.

TOOT Festival A Success For Carnegie Hall

Carnegie Hall’s Taste of Our Towns festival (T.O.O.T.) was held on October 14. The weather was perfect, and the festival was a big success for Carnegie Hall and all who participated. This year’s T.O.O.T. festival will gross more than $19,000 for Carnegie Hall and at least that much for other organizations in the area. An estimated head count for this year’s festival was between 8,000 and 10,000 people.

Gunman Shoots At Lewisburg Patrolman

A Lewisburg police office escaped injury Saturday night after coming under fire during a routine patrol on Fairview Road. Patrolman Gary Workman, on the force only since September, was shot at three times by at least one of the two occupants of a pickup truck just before midnight, according to Chief Police Tim Stover. The vehicle described as a dark -either black or gray-full sized Ford truck, is believed to have taken off into the Carroll Hill or Unus Road area.

Study Tries To Identify Children At Risk For Heart Disease

Greenbrier County’s high rate of heart disease has caused some health care professionals to become involved in a project that will identify children at risk early and hopefully reverse this trend in the future. The Robert C. Byrd Clinic, Rainelle Medical Center, Monroe Health Center, and the Greenbrier County school system have teamed together with William Neal, M.D., from West Virginia University to conduct a cholesterol-screening project among Greenbrier County elementary school children.
