Due to continuing high water conditions on the Greenbrier River, the Ronceverte River Festival Great Rubber Ducky Race is now scheduled for Sunday, June 27, at 4 p.m.
According to Mark Mengel, chair of the Ronceverte River Festival Committee, an abundance of rainfall during the festival forced committee members to make the decision to postpone the first sold-out ducky race in over a decade.
The rainfall also caused some other events to be canceled, like library storytime and some children’s games, Mengel said. However, many events like the fireworks display, the circus and the grand parade were all huge successes.
“Saturday night was really good. We had great fireworks,” Mengel stated. “I have heard nothing but good things about the fireworks. They were amazing.”
Mengel continued that Sensory Saturday was also a great time because those with special needs were able to come out and enjoy the park and the festival without being overwhelmed.
“We are definitely going to be doing that again,” Mengel said of Sensory Saturday. Additionally, he said that because so many people enjoyed the bounce houses and the circus, they will be invited back next year.
Festival goers also enjoyed the grand parade that took place Friday evening. Parade floats were judged by notable West Virginians including Gov. Jim Justice, First Lady Cathy Justice and Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.
