Cass is a small town in West Virginia that has been largely unchanged since it was founded in 1901. It was founded with the purpose of being a company town for loggers who were working in the nearby mountains. The construction of the railway began the same year the town was founded. The railroad was built with the intention of being used to haul lumber to the mill at Cass. After being sold more than once over the years, Cass was made a part of the parks system in 1977. Today, the railroad remains in full operation and is managed by the Durbin Greenbrier Valley Railroad.
The scenic train ride goes to the overlook at Bald Knob, which is the third-highest point in the entire state of West Virginia. There are several ride options for the Cass Scenic Railroad including a four-and-a-half-hour round-trip to Bald Knob as well as a two-hour round-trip venture to Whittaker Station.
Trips are available Tuesday through Sunday with the addition of special events during various points in the year.
The Last Run Restaurant, which is operated by the Bodkin Sisters, is available to riders. The lovely sisters will even pack lunches for people taking a trip up the mountain. The restaurant has twice been featured in the 101 Unique Places to Dine (in West Virginia).
