Robert William Doherty
Robert William Doherty, 93, of Lewisburg, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, WV.
He was born May 12, 1932, in Cambridge, MA to the late Clarence W. Doherty and Gertrude (Mahoney) Doherty.
Raised in Somerville, MA, he graduated with a BA from Tufts University. Robert proudly served five years as an officer in the USMC and served overseas in Okinawa, Japan. After leaving the Marines, he began his career in Insurance Claims in Southern California and retired as Vice President of Claims for The AON Corporation. He served a term as President of the Excess/Surplus Lines Claims Association, an international organization. Robert later started his own Claims Consulting company.
He retired to Fairlea, WV, in 2004. He was a Board member in local organizations including The New Greenbrier Preschool, The Tutoring Center, Carnegie Hall, and Merryhill Home Owners Association.
Robert was well liked and respected by friends and associates. He had a loving, gentle, nurturing spirit. He always tried to live the qualities of the officer and gentleman that he was.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his sister, Mary (Doherty) Sullivan (Jeremiah).
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Laurel (Donner) Doherty; and will be deeply missed by daughter, Angela Pautienus; grandson, Bryan W. Doherty (Kendra); great-grandchild, Rosalie Doherty; brother, James G. Doherty (Kathy); brother-in-law, Jeremiah F. Sullivan, Sr.; and three nephews.
Services will be at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church (407 Walnut Street, Ronceverte, WV) on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 1 p.m. Interment will be private.
