GHENT, W.Va. (WVDN) – As we celebrate Community College Month this April, New River Community and Technical College proudly highlights the success of its Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program, which continues to create career-ready graduates and meet critical workforce needs across southern West Virginia.

This spring, six students recently graduated from the CDL program—all of whom have already secured employment in the transportation industry. The program is also preparing to graduate eight more students in the coming weeks, many of whom are already fielding job offers from local and regional employers.

“The schedule was convenient, the cost was affordable, and the people were genuinely great. They really take care of you and offer a lot of great options. I don’t regret it one bit.” – Matthew McPeake, Current New River CTC CDL Student.

The CDL program at New River CTC is more than just a training course—it’s a launchpad for stable, high-demand careers. With skilled truck drivers in constant demand, the program offers an accelerated pathway for students to earn their license, connect with hiring employers, and enter the workforce with confidence and support.

“These students are leaving with an unrestricted Class A CDL license—they can drive anything on the road. Every student who has come through my class has had a 100% pass rate and a 100% hire rate. The current class is no exception; they’re doing extremely well and are on track for the same success.” — A.G. Burke, CDL Instructional Specialist at New River CTC.

Community colleges like New River CTC are uniquely positioned to meet the region’s workforce needs while opening doors for students who want fast, affordable, and practical career training. The CDL program is one example of how community colleges create real opportunity and impact—transforming lives and strengthening communities.

“It’s a great program, and having a great instructor makes all the difference. I’m really glad I chose New River CTC.”— Shawn Singleton, New River CTC CDL Graduate.

As New River CTC continues to grow its CDL program and build strong partnerships with employers, the college remains committed to providing accessible, high-quality education and training that prepares students for immediate success.
