LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – On Feb. 27, Greenbrier East hosted the West Virginia 2025 JROTC State Air Rifle Championships. Eighteen Schools from all over the state came to compete and show their skills. Greenbrier East’s A team placed first in the competition. Greenbrier East has won first place for the last 12 years, which is significant because it’s very motivational to the current cadets.
The five highest scoring cadets from Greenbrier East’s 2025 air rifle match were Shyan Hall, Victoria Bennett, Emily Dove, Lily Grinstaff and Emma Kincaid. Other Rifle Team members from Greenbrier East are Jensen McNeely, Carson Banton, Joe Garrett, Madison Spencer, Emma Green, Tatum Starrett and Kinsey Brammer. Each cadet was not only competing against the others, but challenging themselves to improve.
This match was important for the competing cadets because it demanded that they apply their leadership and marksmanship skills. The JROTC instructors enjoyed watching their cadets exhibiting their hard work, skills and dedication. Newer cadets were being introduced to participating in competitive rifle matches.
The cadets from all the teams distinguished themselves by encouraging each other and displayed their commitment to teamwork. The award ceremony recognized the teams participating with individual and team awards, banners and t-shirts. The CTE State Championship Cup was awarded to the GEHS Air Rifle Team.
Events like this continue to support the JROTC Mission to motivate young people to be better citizens. The JROTC program would like to thank the county board of education and the community for their support of the excess Levy, which helps make events like this available to our students.
The GEHS Air Rifle Team traveled to Camp Perry, Ohio, to compete in the Junior Olympics. They finished 4th in the Eastern Region and 18th in the Nation, out of over 240 schools competing.
