LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – The streets of historic downtown Lewisburg were abuzz with “sweet” anticipation as Saturday marked the 17th annual Lewisburg Chocolate Festival, drawing hundreds of visitors from across West Virginia and beyond for a day dedicated entirely to the art and indulgence of chocolate.

With the scent of melted chocolate drifting through the crisp Appalachian air, the Chocolate Festival wrapped up Saturday afternoon, bringing hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors to this historic town for a celebration of sweetness, community and creativity. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., several local businesses and vendors offered an array of chocolate-themed treats throughout the town. Truffles, chocolate-dipped bacon, gourmet brownies and inventive chocolate-infused dishes are just a few of the samples tempting taste buds at every corner. The festival, a longtime spring tradition, transforms the picturesque town into a paradise for chocoholics and food lovers alike. Although the weather could have been better, there was a huge turnout for this year’s festival.

In addition to the tasting tour, the festival featured a full slate of entertainment and family-friendly activities. Live music echoed down Washington Street, with performances from regional artists providing a lively soundtrack to the day. Street performers and magicians entertain crowds, while children can enjoy games, balloon art and face painting throughout the downtown area.

Culinary demonstrations were also on the schedule, showcasing regional chefs who use chocolate in both classic and surprising ways. The lines for each section were long, with each patron eagerly awaiting a tasty treat.

What began in 2008 as a small community event has blossomed into a regional attraction, drawing thousands of attendees annually and selling upwards of 40,000 tasting tickets in some years. The event’s growth has never strayed from its original mission, which is to showcase local talent, delight the public and raise funds for a good cause.

For early risers, the day kicked off with the Chocolate Chase, which is a 5K, 10K, and fun walk organized by Greenbrier Valley Hospice. Runners and walkers alike were greeted at the finish line with a well-earned chocolate surprise.

A portion of proceeds from the event benefit the United Way of Greenbrier Valley, supporting essential community services in the areas of education, financial stability and health. According to organizers, the festival has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years and continues to grow in both attendance and community impact.

The United Way of Greenbrier Valley helps fund many programs directed toward health, education and financial stability throughout the region.

With thousands of tasting tickets sold, visitors were encouraged arrive early and come hungry. There were various parking areas around town, with many charging a fee, and volunteers were stationed throughout the event to guide guests and answer questions.

Organizers say the festival continues to grow each year and in addition to raising funds for local causes, it boosts tourism and shines a spotlight on Lewisburg’s vibrant downtown, which has been recognized nationally for its charm and culture.

The Lewisburg Chocolate Festival has become a hallmark event in southern West Virginia, both for its culinary creativity and its commitment to giving back. And as the crowd starts to fade from the beautiful atmosphere of downtown and the music floats through the air, there’s little doubt that this small town knows how to put on a “sweet” show.
