Greenbrier County Commissioners Tammy Tincher, Michael McClung and Lowell Rose met on the morning of Tuesday, March 23 for their regularly-scheduled bi-monthly meeting. One of the meeting’s highlights was the “My Home Town is Cool” presentation by 4H members Suzanne Bicksler, Zach Ellis and Ryan Vaughan.
The presentation was done as part of a statewide competition, through a partnership with WVU Extension Service and the WVU Chamber of College of Business and Economics.
As explained in the presentation, “‘My Home Town is Cool’ is designed to help youth see the opportunities in their local community and work to turn their ideas into reality! This program encourages teams to focus on the assets in their communities and how they can be used to create new and impactful projects and initiatives.”
The “My Home Town is Cool” project centers around renovating the Hollowell Skate Park by adding murals, fencing and a pickleball court. As part of the project, the 4H members surveyed 76 Lewisburg residents to gauge community-perception. Of those surveyed, 86.8% believe that neither Lewisburg nor the surrounding areas, have “enough recreational activities for teenagers and young adults.” In addition, 65.3% believe that making such renovations to Hollowell Skate Park would be beneficial.
Should the “My Home Town is Cool” project be selected as the winner of the statewide competition, it will be awarded $2,500 in the form of an Arts and Recreation grant to be put towards the completion of the renovations.
According to local 4H Agent Robin Haynes, “These kids did such a great job. They’re trying to push something and get it rolling to make a change.”
The complete presentation is available for viewing as part of the March 23 Greenbrier County Commission meeting, currently posted on the Greenbrier County Courthouse’s Facebook page. The West Virginia Daily News will provide updates regarding the “My Home Town is Cool” project as additional details are made available.
