GREENBRIER CO.- Wow. It’s been a while.
Without explaining further, most people would probably know what that referred to.
Winter weather in the area has caused a definite sports withdrawal among the high school ranks in the area. Greenbrier East, Greenbrier West, and even James Monroe have not played a basketball game or hit the mats in over a week–some even longer– but in a crazy way, it feels much longer than that.
When your main job is to cover sports, you stay busy trying to get from game-to-game or event-to-event all within days of each other and a lot of the time, on the same day.
But what is unusual is watching and hearing basically every game get canceled or postponed due to weather and you’re left wondering, “okay, so when is the next one?”
Mother nature has had its way in our viewing areas so far this winter and all signs point to it continuing over the next several weeks. The hope is, however, that this week (week of Jan. 13-18), there will be enough of a break in the weather that the schools can get at least a game or two in without interruption.
The Spartan boys’ basketball team was supposed to participate in the New River CTC Invitational last week and that whole tourney was mostly cancelled except for a part of a day.
The Spartans have been eagerly awaiting a chance to get back on the court since they throttled the Princeton Tigers 79-60. The Class AAA no. 1 Lady Spartans last played Princeton at home that exact night and came out with a 58-29 win to get to 10-0 for the year. The girls are scheduled to play Winfield this Friday night, Jan. 17 and will host Shady Spring the next Saturday evening while the boys are scheduled to meet Pikeview at home tonight, Jan. 14.
It’s been even longer for the Class A no. 5 ranked Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers as they have not played since a 60-50 victory over River View on Dec. 30 and haven’t hit the court in the year 2025 yet.
The West boys also have not played in a long time and barring any setbacks, will host Summers County this Friday night, Jan. 17.
Let’s not forget wrestling, either. We are all anxious to see all the wrestlers back on the mats.
Even with all the complaining about the cancellations, we are all fortunate to live in a place that experiences all four weather seasons and things could always be worse.
Still, we can all admire the beauty of the snow while crossing our fingers that these teams are all back on the courts soon.
