The town of Alderson wishes to advise residents of a potential scam related to “delinquent water balances”.
Through a social media post dated Tuesday, March 9, town officials stated, “We were alerted to one of our customers receiving an automated phone call from ‘her water company and that she has a delinquent balance’. It further prompted her to ‘push one to make a payment and avoid termination’.”
Town officials further stated that while Alderson does use a “call tree” system to advise resident customers of past-due balances and emergency situations, their “system always identifies with ‘this is an important notification from the Town of Alderson’.”
In addition, when Alderson’s automated system calls resident customers regarding a past-due balance, it does not offer an option to pay the balance over the phone.
The number that appears on caller ID will always be that of Ronceverte City Hall; 304-445-2916.
The West Virginia Daily News will provide updates regarding this situation as additional details are made available.
