WEST VIRGINIA (WVDN) – As a West Virginia born filmmaker, Eddie Mensore has always wanted to highlight the stories from his cherished community, honoring the rich, cultural history of Appalachia. The pride and respect Mensore has for his birthplace is expertly displayed in his work from his thrilling and action-packed West Virginia coal mine drama MINE 9, a box office hit across the region in 2019, and his moving and respectful portrayal of the struggles of addiction plaguing the heart of his birthplace, in his award-winning new film “HAZARD”, starring Sosie Bacon (2022’s box office smash, SMILE), Alex Roe (RINGS, FOREVER MY GIRL), Dave Davis (THE VIGIL, RENFIELD), Steven Ogg (THE WALKING DEAD, SNOWPIERCER), and WV’s own Kevin Sizemore (MINE 9).
Like one of his filmmaking heroes, Oscar-winner Barbara Kopple (HARLAN COUNTY, USA), Mensore’s love and respect for the people he portrays are evident throughout his work.
“Through my films, I aim to continue bridging the gap between my Appalachian community and the wider world, showcasing the resilience and culture of Appalachia, even as the region confronts some of its darkest challenges.” says Mensore.
“HAZARD” (Filmed in Harlan County) unveils a haunting look at a mining town entangled in the grip of the opioid crisis. In this intense drama, Will, a reluctant drug dealer, fights to shield his family from the same devastating addiction that has ravaged their community. Despite his efforts, every choice threatens to pull him and his loved ones deeper into chaos. HAZARD is a powerful portrayal of resilience and sacrifice, as Will must decide whether to succumb to the addiction he despises or rise above it to save his family.
The film will begin its theatrical release on Jan. 10, 2025, with screenings in over two dozen theaters across Appalachia. On Jan. 17, the release will expand throughout the region, followed by openings in Los Angeles on Feb. 7 and Atlanta on Feb. 14.
Director/writer Eddie Mensore (MINE 9), select cast, and Louisville KY-based producer Gill Holland will attend select screenings and host Q & A panel events during the film’s theatrical run.
