Roy T. Morris, 94, of Ronceverte, WV, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at his residence with family by his side.
He was born on April 5, 1925, in Ronceverte, and was the son of Moffett E. and Maude Lightner Morris.
Roy was a WWII Navy veteran for three years with the rank of Coxswain. He served in Africa, Sicily, Italy, and through the Suez Canal to Australia to the South Pacific.
He was a life member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Roy had worked at Martin & Jones Hardware in Ronceverte, worked 10 years with the C & O Railroad, and retired after 33 years of service with U. S. Post Office. He spent 17 years as Fire Chief with the Ronceverte Fire Department. Roy was a Master Mason of Monroe Lodge #77, a 32° Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of Beni Kedum Shrine in Charleston. He was also a member of the Greenbrier Valley Shrine Club. Roy was an avid WVU fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Coffman Morris on January 1; son, Ernest; brothers, Earl “Rusty” Morris and George “Mutt” Morris; and his sister, Mildred Williams.
Surviving are his children, Alan Morris (Karen) of Lewisburg, WV, Brenda K. Austin (Shawn) of Huntersville, NC, and Angie Morris (Sam Massie) of Ronceverte; brother, Donald Morris of Roanoke, VA; sister, Dorothy Byers of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren, Tiffany Steele (Chris) of Lewisburg and Ethan Morris (Lauren) of Lewisburg; great-grandchildren, Rhylee Steele, and Izaak and Elijah Morris; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Roy will be held on Friday, January 17, 2020, at 2 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte, with Pastor Sam Groves officiating. Interment will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Ronceverte, with Masonic graveside rites by Monroe Lodge #77.
The family will receive family and friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to HospiceCare Inc., 1265 Maplewood Ave., Lewisburg, WV 24901.
