Brandon’s Movie Review: Twisters

LEWISBURG- On a slow Friday afternoon, I finally made it to Lewisburg Cinema 8 to see the film I had heard and read nothing but good things about.

Twisters.

First, before diving into the movie itself, it is rather surprising, but also extremely awesome that our theatre is busy on a Friday afternoon. There were probably 10 people in line for the 12:55 showing—the one I went to—and when I left, there were at least 20-25 cars in the parking lot. I think it is great for the community to have such a nice theatre and for it to be doing so well, at least from an outside view, on the business side of things.

Anyway, Twisters is labeled as a direct sequel to the 1996 blockbuster ‘Twister’ but you don’t necessarily need to have seen the first one to enjoy the current one, although it is worth the watch as well.

The 2024 version stars Glenn Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos. I’ve noticed myself liking movies more when they aren’t chalked full of huge Hollywood stars but have lesser-known actors that make the film just as enjoyable. To me, they seem more authentic that way too.

The plot in Twisters is easy to follow and easy to enjoy. Kate (Edgar-Jones) is basically a weather genius. She’s from small town Oklahoma and developed a plan to slow down tornadoes and one day, her and a group of science friends go out and chase one down to test out her theory so that she can eventually save thousands of future tornado victims. However, not everything goes according to plan and without giving anything away, Kate moves to New York.

Eventually, one of those friends (Ramos) shows up in the Empire State to convince Kate to come back home to Oklahoma and help him and his team test out some new groundbreaking technology that literally could give them the info they need on how to lessen twisters.

While back home, Kate is introduced to a free spirited “tornado wrangler” (Powell) who chases them for clout, fame, and YouTube subscribers, at least at first. So many things happen from that point forward that going to see the movie will unfold all of that for you.

I loved the movie. It is about two hours long, but it’s one of those where you don’t find yourself glancing at your watch to see how much longer is left. It’s the opposite. With all the beautiful cinematography and action sequences, you kind of sit and hope for a little more.

The soundtrack is also great. Each song that plays in the movie goes with certain scenes to perfection.

‘Twisters’ is a must see. Between the story, the action, the music, and all the points in between, it is easy to see why it is still no. 2 in the box office and has made over 200 million dollars so far since its release. It is just good old-fashioned entertainment that does not try to be something it isn’t and honestly, that’s what most people want, so bravo to Director Lee Isaac Chung and writers Mark Smith, Joseph Kosinski, and Michael Crichton.
