SWEET SPRINGS W.Va. (WVDN) – The historic Sweet Springs Turnpike Trail, located at the Sweet Springs Park, has, as of May 31, been named a National Recreational Trail by the Department of the Interior. The trail will now be referred to as “The Sweet Springs Turnpike Extended Trail Network,” meaning the Historic Turnpike Trail is now part of an extended network of trails throughout the United States. What a great honor this is for the Turnpike Trail.

All the volunteer staff at Sweet Springs Resort Park want to thank everyone who worked to help create the Turnpike Trail, who supports the Park and who has donated time/money for the restoration of this magnificent property.

February 1830 – The Virginia General Assembly ordered the construction of a stagecoach trail that would lead to the “Old Sweet,” creating a faster and safer way to travel to one of the oldest “warm water spas” in Virginia. The warm water spa at Sweet Springs was a healing spa that brought dignitaries from foreign countries to this area to enjoy the grandeur of the hotel and the healing from the 73-degree water in the healing pool. Once the Fincastle-Sweet Springs Turnpike (also referred to as the Prices Mountain-Sweet Springs Turnpike) was designed/surveyed by Claudius Crozet, James Shank built the trail, receiving 100% ownership of the trail.
