Paul Eugene “Gene” Myers, 94, of Ronceverte, WV, died peacefully at home on Monday, October 22, 2018. He was surrounded by his family.
Gene was born in Jacksonville, FL, on March 3, 1924, to Paul and Florence Brodbeck Myers.
He grew up in Cumberland, MD, and graduated from Fort Hill High School. He served during World War II in the South Pacific, and returned to graduate from Lafayette University with a degree in chemistry. He moved to the Kanawha Valley to work at Union Carbide in South Charleston, WV, and attended First Presbyterian Church in St. Albans, WV.
In 1978, he moved to the Greenbrier Valley and served as the director of development at Davis-Stuart Inc. until his retirement. Gene was passionate about community service, and during his retirement, he worked to build services for the citizens of Greenbrier County as the executive director of the United Way of Greenbrier Valley.
Gene was a member of the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church, serving in leadership positions throughout the many years he attended. Gene was a member and past president of the Lewisburg Rotary Club and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. Through his association with the Rotary Club, he sponsored exchange students and provided leadership to countless individuals.
His rich baritone voice was a beautiful addition to the Men of Greenbrier, where he sang in venues around the eastern seaboard. He served with the American Legion Post 26 in Ronceverte.
Gene loved his family and was happiest when the house was full and chaos ensued. He enjoyed playing bridge at the Lewisburg Elks Club with his friends, telling jokes, and having engaging conversation with anyone and everyone. Gene never knew a stranger and would lend a hand to help his fellow man. His acts of generosity will never be fully known by his family. One of the most impressive and valued qualities Gene ever possessed was his ability to love selflessly. He created and blended the families that would love him dearly throughout his life and will carry his lessons of service, love, and commitment to family for generations to come.
Gene was preceded in death by his father; mother; brother, Richard; first wife, Neva Webb Myers; his loving daughter-in-law, Betsy Rawlins Myers; and his special girl, Debbie Bailey.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Phyllis Fisher Myers; his brother, Donald (Elaine); and his children, Nancy Goodman (Robert), Jeffrey Myers, Jeana Myers (Will), Jan Hall, and Teresa Hammond. He was enamored with his beautiful grandchildren, Andrew, Katie, Russell, Clara, Olivia, Eli, Suzi, Marcy, Scott, and Emily. Adding to his joy and his amazement were his great-grandchildren Samuel, Kalia, Walter, Tate, Hank, and the blessings in the making that will hear of the wonderful grandpa that shaped and lead this great big, beautiful family.
The family thanks hospice, Dr. Matthew Davis, and his nurses, Rachel and Emily, for the excellent care they provided to Gene.
A celebration to honor the life of Paul Eugene Myers will be held Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Ronceverte Presbyterian Church, 305 Locust Street, Ronceverte, WV.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., and the service will begin at 12:00 p.m. A luncheon immediately follow the service.
