ST. ALBANS- After a big win over Woodrow Wilson on Monday night, the Greenbrier Spartans had a little momentum heading into Thursday’s game with the St. Albans Red Dragons in what was a rematch of last year’s Region 3 series final.
Unfortunately, the Spartans suffered an 11-1 loss and were no-hit by Red Dragons ace pitcher Noah Reed.
Reed struck out 11 Spartans over six innings and allowed 1 unearned run.
East’s Gavin Bennett took the loss, but he was solid and pitched well enough to win had the bats been better. Bennett pitched 5 innings and allowed 6 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), walked 3 and struck out 9.
East had opportunities in the third inning when they got two runners on base, but nothing came of it. They trailed just 5-1 after five innings, but the Red Dragons, ranked 11th in the first set of power rankings, exploded for six game-clinching runs in the sixth to run away with it.
Besides his no-hitter on the mound, Reed also went 3-4 at the plate with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Will Curry was 2-3 for the Red Dragons.
The Spartans will play Musselman tonight, weather permitting. That game is supposed to be played at Spartan Yards at 7:00 PM, but it could possibly be moved to Beckley depending on which field is in better shape after the recent storms.
On Saturday, April 5, East will host Musselman at 10:00 AM and then play Hurricane at 3:00 PM.
