Wayne Lee Canterbury

Wayne Lee Canterbury, 61, of Dover, NC, formerly of Organ Cave, WV, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at his home from a long term illness.

He is preceded in death by his father, Everette Canterbury; grandparents, Ira and Viola Canterbury, William and Nellie Holliday; uncle, Dale Canterbury; and father-in-law, Charles “Doke” Honaker.

Wayne was a former lumber inspector and an auctioneer. He more recently owned his own landscaping company, before retirement, where he enjoyed planting, especially palm trees. Wayne never met a stranger, and he loved to talk. He was also an avid West Virginia fan and supporter; but what he loved most was being called “Papa”. He adored all of his grandchildren. He and his partner in crime, McKenzie, shared many crazy and wonderful times together that he would look back on fondly. The few times that he cooked, he loved sharing with people.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 43 years, Theresa Canterbury, of the home; mother, Delores Canterbury of Ronceverte, WV; daughter, Ericka Race and husband, Edward, of Kinston; son, William Canterbury of Lynchburg, VA; grandchildren, McKenzie Race, Grady James Canterbury, Aspen Race; brother, Brian Canterbury of Ronceverte, WV; mother-in-law, Linda Honaker; sisters-in-law, Mary LaFon and husband, Wayne, and Michelle Marcum and husband, Todd, of WV; brother-in-law, Troy Honaker and wife, Vonda, of WV; aunt and uncles, Arnold and Lois Morgan of Covington, VA, and Denny Canterbury of Organ Cave, WV; numerous nieces and nephews and special nephew, Colten Nickell of Myrtle Beach, SC; special cousin, Dr. Eric Morgan of Maryville, TN; cousins, Randy Morgan and wife, Staci, Ray Canterbury, Denise Canterbury, and families; and fur babies, Dorabella and Dan.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Organ Cave Community Center, 2662 Seneca Trail S., Ronceverte, WV.

Online condolences may be sent to garnerfuneralhome.com.

Garner Funeral Home of Kinston, NC, is assisting the family with arrangements.
