Delbert William Saylor of Covington, VA, and for the past 24 years,
White Sulphur Springs, WV, died Friday, August 24, 2018, in Aiken, SC.
He was born April 21, 1926, in Beckley, WV, to James Saylor and Brillar
Jane Saylor.
He was employed by John B. Salterini Co. in Covington, Ford Motor Co. in
Cleveland, OH, Bath County Pumped Storage Project in Bath Co., VA, and
the Westvaco Extruder Plant in Low Moor, VA.
In September 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. and was sent to
the Pacific area to serve in World War II. He was wounded in Okinawa,
Ryukru Island, in 1945 and served against the Occupation of China in
1946. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal for injuries received during
bravery above and beyond expectations.
Delbert was an avid NASCAR race fan, where he spent most weekends in the
summer watching the races and cheering on his favorite, Ford. One of the
highlights of his later years was to drive laps on his 76th birthday at
the Charlotte Motor Speedway and dine with family in the restaurant
upstairs overlooking the raceway.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Laura
Saylor; three brothers, Freeman “Louie” Saylor, James Saylor, and Edward
“Popeye” Saylor; two sisters, Virginia Lee Smith and Vivian Hall; and
one grandson, Jody Sprague.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Riordan and husband, Kevin, of
Aiken, and Patricia Rose and husband, Bill, of Covington. He is also
survived by grandson, Richard Cromer of Melbourne, FL; two
granddaughters, Laura Cupp of Gainesville, GA, and Shannon Fogus of
Covington; and other grandchildren, great -grandchildren, nephews, and
nieces.
There will be a memorial service held at the Alvon United Methodist
Church on Rt. 92, White Sulphur Springs, on Saturday, October 20, 2018,
at 10 a.m. There will be a graveside service with military rites at
Mapledale Cemetery, Rt. 92, White Sulphur Springs, following the service.
