CHARMCO- Shutout wins are always good. But when they are against your main rival, they are typically a little better.
The Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers got strong pitching from sophomore Brilee Redden and some timely hits from Hannah Sweet and Brooklyn Adkins as they defeated the James Monroe Lady Mavericks 7-0 on Thursday, March 21.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cavs got on the board in the second when Kyndall Taylor laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that scored Ava Price and gave West a 1-0 lead.
Pitching and defense was good on both sides over the next inning-and-a-half until the Cavs came to life again in the bottom half of the fourth. Maddie Fields started it with a triple to lead off the inning. An error on the next play, a grounder from Julia Herndon, scored Fields and made it 2-0, West. Then, like Fields, Adkins ripped an RBI triple to right field and Price scored to make it 3-0. Adkins crossed home plate a couple batters later on a fielder’s choice and the Cavs led 4-0 after four.
At that point, that was all the offense Redden needed on the hill. She retired the Mavericks in order on just 12 pitches in the fifth and after getting into some slight trouble in the sixth, she fanned Evey Hart to get out of the mini jam.
The Cavaliers responded with three insurance runs in the bottom half that included an RBI base hit from Sweet and West wrapped up the important early season victory.
Sweet went 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Adkins was 1-2, scored two runs, and drove in another and Fields had a triple and a run scored as well.
Redden threw a complete game, two-hitter and struck out 12.
With the win, the Lady Cavs moved to 5-0.
