GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – On Feb. 21, at the Culture Center in Charleston, Jane Hughes, archives volunteer for the Greenbrier Historical Society, was named a West Virginia History Hero by The Division of Arts, Culture and History, Randall Reid-Smith, Curator.
Nominated by the Greenbrier Historical Society, Hughes was recognized for her tireless devotion to cataloging and sharing the diverse history of the Greenbrier Valley area through the collections housed in the North House Museum. She has a background in library science and served as a librarian before retirement. She has made many improvements to the library and archives. She separated the archives records from the library collection in PastPerfect. She has cataloged the family genealogy collection; re-cataloged the Lewisburg homes collection; and documented and cataloged the Greenbrier County Courthouse ledgers stored off-site. She is currently in the process of cataloging, classifying and making accessible many other resources.
The award was announced by the Director of Archives and History, Aaron Parsons, and presented by Thomas Bailey, Chair of the WV Archives and History Commission. GHS President Al Emch also attended the ceremony and said, “Jane’s dedicated service to the people who come to the Greenbrier Historical Society to investigate their ancestry has been especially remarkable. This recognition is most well deserved.”
About the award, Hughes said, “I really appreciate the opportunity I’ve had to help folks find historical and genealogical information. That I can use my education, skills and curiosity about the past to help people in my retirement is just plain wonderful!”
