WHITE SULPHUR SPGS- This weekend promises to bring plenty of sports action to Greenbrier County as fans from many schools will visit for a couple of days.
The West Virginia State Wrestling Dual Championships are being held at the state fairgrounds and about 10 minutes down the road, the third annual ‘Battle for the Springhouse’ basketball tournament will be underway inside Colonial Hall at the Greenbrier Resort.
Between the two events, an estimated 1,500-1750 people are estimated to tour the Greenbrier Valley this weekend.
Having been to the first two Springhouse tourneys, it is a fun time, and it is such a nice experience to be able to go over to the Greenbrier, walk around a little, have lunch or dinner, then go enjoy some high-level basketball.
This year, the quality of the teams is once again at an elite level for West Virginia high school.
At 2:00 PM on Friday, February 2, the tournament tips off with the North Marion girls taking on Mingo Central. That game will be followed by Class AAAA no. 5 Huntington and Shady Spring (Class AAA no. 2) in the boy’s division at 4:00 PM in what should be an appealing matchup. The nightcap will have plenty of interest as the Greenbrier East Spartan boys’ team battles 2nd ranked Morgantown at 6:00 PM, and the Lady Spartans will face the Logan Lady Wildcats at 8:00 PM in the final game of the day.
The winners and losers will continue play on Saturday with the championship games between the winners at 5:00 PM for the boys and 7:00 PM for the girls. The consolation matchups will be held at 1:00 PM (boys) and 3:00 PM (girls).
Tickets can be purchased by going to Greenbrier.com. They are $5 each.
