FAIRLEA- This is turning into a legitimate streak.
After an impressive 54-46 victory over the Hurricane Lady Redskins on Friday night, Jan. 26, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans ran their winning streak to nine games and are showing zero signs of slowing down.
There is no greater evidence of that fact than the beginning of this game. The Spartans got down early 11-5 and then that deficit grew to 16-7 because of Hurricane’s Kendall Anderson, who scored 11 first quarter points. After one, East trailed 16-10.
A couple baskets from Hannah Fuller and three points from Ava Workman kept the Spartans (11-3) in the game and Fuller’s second score actually put East up 17-16 with just over three minutes to play in the first half. Then, Jada Waller and Mackenna McClure hit back-to-back 3s as the Spartans began to settle in. With East down 24-23 with 5 seconds remaining, McClure hit her second three of the quarter at the buzzer and East took a 2-point lead at the break.
That basket really fueled the Spartans in the second half. Their defense picked up in the third quarter, and their offense made enough plays to slowly pull ahead. A Fuller jumper and a Kennedy Stewart trifecta highlighted the third as the Spartans increased their lead to 40-33 after three quarters. A Workman 3-point play and another Stewart 3 pushed East’s lead to 48-36 midway through the fourth, but Anderson and Gabrielle Quijano did their best to keep the Redskins (7-9) within striking distance. They cut the deficit to six points late, but it was just that, too late, and East kept their win streak moving forward.
The Spartans shot 47 percent in the second half and 38 for the game. They held the fast-starting Redskin offense to just 31 percent shooting for the game.
East committed 20 turnovers to just 13 for Hurricane, but the Spartans won the game from behind the arc where they made nine shots. Hurricane hit only four 3s on the evening.
Stewart had a nice all-around game with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. McClure also scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Fuller added 10 points and 4 boards.
Anderson led Hurricane with 18 points and 6 rebounds.
East is back in action on Saturday evening, Jan. 27 at home against Hedgesville. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM as the Spartans will try for their ninth consecutive win.
