MORGANTOWN- It has been a weird season for the WVU Mountaineers filled with suspensions, injuries, waiver denials, hospitalizations, and more, but on Saturday night, Jan. 20, the Mountaineers finally put a full game together and defeated the 3rd ranked Kansas Jayhawks 91-85 in head coach Josh Eilert’s biggest win to date.
Raequan Battle scored 23 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead WVU (7-11) to the upset. Patrick Suemnick added 20 points and 6 boards as his string of good play continued, and Kerr Kriisa knocked in 15 points.
Kevin McCullar led the Jayhawks (15-3) with 24 points.
Over 12,500 fans showed up to support the struggling Mounties, but if this game was any indication of how things could possibly be moving forward, West Virginia could go on a run if they take one game at a time. One nice shot in the arm coming soon will be the return of center Jesse Edwards who suffered a wrist injury about four weeks ago. Edwards is averaging around 16 points and 10 rebounds per game and would immediately make the Mountaineers better in many ways.
WVU goes on the road to face the UCF Knights this Tuesday, Jan. 23 and Edwards has been rumored to be available in that one.
