Marilyn Lee Campbell Carney

Marilyn Lee Campbell Carney, 87, of Greenbrier County, WV, died on Sunday, December 10, 2023, after a long illness.

Born on November 17, 1936, in Charleston, WV, and raised in Greenbrier County, Marilyn was the daughter of the late Brack and Mildred (Smith) Campbell of Rupert, WV. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles O.L. Carney, in 2015; and her daughter, Elizabeth Carney Curry, in 2020.

Marilyn was a graduate of Rupert High School and Marshall University, and she was a teacher of different subjects in elementary, middle, and high schools, including teaching special education at Greenbrier East High School in Fairlea, WV.

As a special education teacher, Marilyn was a strong advocate for the disabled and disadvantaged. She was known to be a strong woman and independent thinker, who participated in public issues to support West Virginians and all Appalachians.

Marilyn was devoted to her family and friends, and she enjoyed spending summers with them on the banks of the Greenbrier River. Marilyn also enjoyed traveling with her husband, Charlie; her sister, Sue; and Sue’s husband, Bruce Moss. Sue and her family were part of the daily life of Marilyn in many ways.

Marilyn was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in White Sulphur Springs, WV, where she had many dear friends and served on the Vestry. She also served on the board of the Frankford Ruritan Club and supported its fundraising efforts to provide scholarships for local young people in the area.

Surviving are her children, Charles B. Carney and wife, Angel, of Roanoke, VA, Clinton Carney and wife, Marielena, of San Diego, CA, Jon Carney and wife, Angela, of Coos Bay, OR; and son-in-law, Craig Curry of Parkersburg, WV. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Cate Carney, Sarah Campbell Carney, Nick Curry, Cat Curry, and Sean Curry; and three great-grandchildren, Sophia Curry, Elliott Curry, and Nora Elizabeth Curry.

A memorial will be held on January 27, 2024, at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in White Sulphur Springs, WV, with Reverend Betsy Walker presiding. Friends and family will be received at the church, before and after the service.

The interment will take place on a different date in a private ceremony with family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Marilyn to St. Thomas Episcopal Church in White Sulphur Springs or to the Frankford Ruritan Club Scholarship Fund.
