Amid the cherry blossom blooms, Ronceverte City Council met in their regular meeting and in executive session to conduct regular business and interview new potential councilmembers.
After interviews and deliberations in executive session, the council selected Deena M. Pack as its newest member. Pack was nominated to fill the seat of Bob Baker, who passed away in March.
“We had some amazing interviews and it was difficult to make a decision,” said Ronceverte Mayor David Smith. “We are incredibly lucky that we had amazing folks apply. We weren’t out begging on the streets.”
According to the city charter, City Council has 30 days to fill an empty seat after the time of vacancy. This set the deadline to fill the seat on April 2 to find the new councilmember, the date of the Monday regular meeting.
Pack will fill the position for the remainder of Baker’s term, until June 30, 2019, and would have to run in the 2019 election if she desires to stay in office past the unexpired term. Baker was re-elected to City Council in the 2015 election.
