LINDSIDE, WV- The top-seeded James Monroe Mavericks let their defense do the talking in their WVSSAC state playoff quarterfinal 17-0 victory over Cameron on Saturday, Nov. 18.
The Mavericks forced four turnovers including a game-clinching pick-6 from Wil Boggess, who had two interceptions in the contest.
The game was a scoreless dog fight until about six-and-a-half minutes left in the third quarter when James Monroe finally got on the scoreboard with a Ryan Mann 26-yard touchdown reception from Chaz Boggs.
That score gave all the momentum to the Maverick sideline, and they never relinquished it.
Peyton Gardinier kicked a 22-yard field goal late in the fourth which gave James Monroe what turned out to be an insurmountable 10-0 lead. Boggess’ 70-yard interception return for a score just turned out to be the icing on the proverbial cake.
Cooper Ridgeway had eight total tackles, two TFL’s, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Boggess had the two interceptions. Mann had seven tackles and a pick. Brock Parker had eight tackles and blocked a key punt. Jacob Hall had five tackles, two TFL’s, and a quarterback sack. Other Mavericks stepped up as well which led to a total dominant defensive effort. Cameron had entered the game averaging nearly 48 points per contest.
James Monroe will now turn their attention to a rematch with the Greenbrier West Cavaliers this Friday night, Nov. 24 in Lindside at 7:30 PM. The winner of that one will head to Wheeling for a chance to play for a state championship. Greenbrier West defeated James Monroe 25-8 in Charmco several weeks ago.
