LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – Lewisburg House and Garden Club awards the Grand Prize for Largest Sunflower Contest to Jackson Crane, a Lewisburg Elementary School 4th grader in Ms. Braskey’s class. Jackson’s sunflower measured 54 3/4” in circumference. Jackson received a “Birds of West Virginia” book and a $25 cash prize for his winning sunflower.
Grace Hill wins the Grand Prize for Largest Sunflower Contest at Ronceverte Elementary School. Grace is a 3rd grader in Mrs. Wood’s class. Grace’s sunflower measured 50 1/2” in circumference. Grace received a “Birds of West Virginia” book and $25 cash prize for her champion sunflower.
The Garden Club’s annual joy is to distribute sunflower seeds to the students in May and return in September for a friendly contest. Every participant is awarded a conservation certificate and a $1 prize. The club has been distributing seeds, teaching nature’s cycle, and organizing the contest since 1959. Students learn about nature’s cycle, and the value of feeding the area’s birds.
