LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – The Greenbrier County Public Library in Lewisburg participated in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Day in West Virginia on Wednesday, Aug. 9. The West Virginia Department of Education and the West Virginia Board of Education celebrated “Dolly Day” with read-aloud events around the state and invited GCPL to participate.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is supported through a partnership between the WVDE and the June Harless Center at Marshall University as part of the mission to support early learning and literacy efforts. The June Harless Center helped coordinate and promote Dolly Day events, which featured a read-aloud of the book “Find Fergus” by Mike Boldt.
The special guest reader for the Lewisburg event was West Virginia First Lady Cathy Justice. She was a big hit with the 40 children and 20 parents in attendance. The activities also included a literary scavenger hunt. CAMC/Greenbrier Valley Medical Center was on hand to present frisbees, lighted bouncy balls and cups to the kids, and everyone enjoyed ice cream and snacks.
The event doubled as a celebration of the end of the library’s summer reading program, as the planned swimming party was canceled due to weather. Of the 135 children registered, 78 finished the reading challenges. In total the participants read 2,331 books.
“Summer reading programs are important to prevent summer slide in children’s reading abilities, while also offering exciting activities to create lifelong library users, says Christy Carver, the library’s assistant director and coordinator of children’s programming. “We hope to grow readers and library users by exposing participants to books, crafts, special guests and just plain fun at the library.”
