FAIRLEA, WV- The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans soccer team hit the field at midnight on Sunday night/Monday morning to kick off the fall sports practices at Greenbrier East.
Coach Mike Dotson is ready for what is expected to be another great year for the ladies, and the first practice only solidified that thought.
“The energy is very high,” Dotson said of the opening night.
“Something about being under the lights early in the season. We play music for most of practice. The players also played pickleball, had a late snack and other team bonding before they arrived at the field,” Dotson concluded.
The Lady Spartans open up the season on August 16 at home against Pikeview.
Several hours later, the boys team opened up their first practice and officially started defending their 2022 state championship. Gone from that team are Adam Seams, Chase Mizia, Luke Dolin and Caden Midkiff, among others, but enough talent returns for the Spartans to make another push for a special season.
“It was great. We had 40 student athletes out, and we planned for that so everything was measurable so we could collect the data and make an honest assessment of the student athletes,” head coach Lucas Lemine said.
“We kept 32 and will get straight to work with that group tomorrow. Building a technical base and putting in basic tactics,” Lemine added.
Regular season schedules for both teams will be published soon.
