BRIDGEPORT, WV- The Central Greenbrier all-stars jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and withstood a late push and defeated Ona Milton 7-4 on Sunday morning, July 16.
CG got their offense going early as Alex Hanna and Evan Dixon singled to open the game, then Bo Bundy smacked an RBI double that scored Hanna. A couple batters later, Bundy and Sherman both scored on a wild pitch as Central Greenbrier jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead.
They added two more in the top half of the second when Hanna blooped a single to right field that scored Carter Huffman and James Godby. At that point in the game, it was 5-0.
One more run came across in the third when Peyton Ervin singled home Bundy, and CG led 6-0.
Ona Milton did not lay down, however. They answered with two runs in the third and fourth innings to trim their deficit to 6-4.
But Kayden Hinkle’s RBI single that scored Colton DeHaven gave CG an insurance run late in the contest. Sherman then recorded the last two outs in the bottom of the sixth and picked up the save to seal the win for Central Greenbrier.
Cooper Sabbag started on the mound. He pitched 5.1 innings, allowed just two earned runs and had nine strikeouts.
Hanna (2-3, run, 2 RBIs) and Bundy (2-2, 2 runs, RBI) led the offensive attack that racked up nine hits on the day.
CG plays at 2:00 PM today, Sunday, July 16 in the double-header nightcap.
