BRIDGEPORT, WV- The Central Greenbrier 10-12 all-stars made the two-and-a-half-hour trek to Bridgeport for a battle with Hurricane on Friday, July 14 in their opening game in the state tournament.
Unfortunately for CG, Hurricane was just too strong as they got 14 hits and beat Central Greenbrier 12-3.
CG went down in order to open the game, but Elijah Sherman got Hurricane to do the same. But, when Central Greenbrier failed to take advantage in the top half of the second, Hurricane made them pay for it in the bottom half.
Hurricane turned three hits, three walks and a hit-by-pitch into four critical runs and a 4-0 lead after two. They would add two more scores in the third and after three complete innings, Hurricane held a comfortable 6-0 lead.
Central Greenbrier put together a nice rally in the top of the fifth. Bo Bundy singled and Sherman walked. Two batters later, CG got some two-out magic. Colton DeHaven singled home Bundy as CG trimmed the deficit to 6-1. The next batter, Carter Huffman, singled, but before that Sherman and DeHaven scored on a wild pitch and an error by the catcher. That made the score 6-3 with Hurricane coming to bat, as Huffman was left stranded on the basepath.
And that was the at-bat that put the game away.
Hurricane scored six runs to cap the scoring in the game, and CG was put in an 0-1 hole in the tournament. They will now have to try to battle back out of the loser’s bracket.
Alex Hanna, Bundy, DeHaven, Huffman and Kayden Hinkle each had one hit apiece for the five total for the team. Sherman took the loss on the pitcher’s mound.
Central Greenbrier will await the loser of Chapmanville and Moorfield and play that game on Saturday, July 14 at noon.
