FAYETTEVILLE, WV- The Central Greenbrier all-stars returned to the diamond tonight, Thursday, June 29 in Fayetteville and recorded their second 16-0 shutout of the tournament, this time doing it over Midland Trail.
CG, who lost on Wednesday night, 2-0 to Sophia, jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but it was an 11-run, hit-filled fourth inning that put the game on ice.
Carter Huffman tossed a four-inning no hitter and had 11 strikeouts as CG was in control from start to finish.
After a single from Evan Dixon in the top of the first inning, Bo Bundy stepped up to the plate and singled Dixon home for a quick 1-0 lead. A couple batters later, Acen Workman hit an RBI single that scored Bundy, and Central Greenbrier held a 2-0 lead. Elijah Sherman then scored on an RBI groundout from Peyton Ervin, and CG led 3-0 after one.
Little did Midland Trail know at the time, that was all the run support Huffman would have needed. After he hit the first batter with a pitch, Huffman struck out the side to set the tone on that side of the field early.
Dixon would score on a wild pitch in the top of the third, then Ervin ripped an RBI double to center that scored Workman, and just like that, CG took a 5-0 lead.
Central Greenbrier just unloaded the offense in the fourth. Kayden Hinkle had an RBI triple, Dixon got an RBI double, and Colton DeHaven laced a double that resulted in three runs crossing the plate. They totaled 10 hits in the frame and cruised to victory from there.
Dixon and Hinkle led the offensive onslaught that produced 17 total hits as both finished 3-3 at the plate. Dixon scored three runs and had an RBI, and Hinkle scored a run and drove in two more. Workman, Ervin, Huffman, and Cooper Sabbag all managed two hits on the night. Workman had three RBIs. Ervin and DeHaven each had two RBIs.
Every out Huffman recorded was a strikeout except for one which was a weak groundout in the last inning.
CG will play Princeton tomorrow night, Friday, June 30 in Sophia.
