An off-duty Alderson police officer was shot and wounded in Summers County on Friday, October 27. Officer Mccaden Brackenrich and two people were wounded in the shooting.
“The thoughts and prayers of all the staff and citizens of the town of Alderson go out to Mr. Brackenrich and his family,” according to a statement released by the town of Alderson.
Frederick D. Tolliver, 66, of Alderson was arrested in relation to the shooting in Summers County.
According to the criminal compliant, Senior Trooper N.C. Boothe of the West Virginia State Police Hinton Detachment was dispatched to Eagle Branch Road.
Five men were allegedly driving an ATV into the Tolliver’s driveway to turn around when they were fired upon. Three of the men, including Brackenrich, were struck.
According to the criminal complaint filed against Tolliver, “the defendant then stated that he began to shoot at the vehicle … without knowing who was in said vehicle” and “there had been no threats of violence made [toward] him and did not see any weapons being brandished to him.”
Brackenrich was airlifted to Charleston Area Medical Center for critical care. Another victim was taken to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.
Tolliver was arrested and charged with three counts of malicious wounding, a felony which carries a sentence of confinement in a state correctional facility not less than two nor more than 1 years, and five counts of attempted murder, a felony which carries imprisonment in the penitentiary for not less than one nor more than three years, or be confined in jail not less than six nor more than 12 months, and fined not exceeding $500, in Summers County Magistrate Court.
Boothe leads the investigation into the case, according to the town of Alderson’s press release.
