FAIRLEA, WV- The Greenbrier East Spartans defeated the Princeton Tigers 10-0 on Tuesday night, May 9 in the Region 3, Section 2 opener at Spartan Yards in Fairlea.
East, the top seed in the section, had just five hits, but still ended the game in five innings.
They got going early in the bottom of the first. Ian Cline got hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and Ashton Cochran followed with a walk. Darris Boswell then was hit by a pitch as well and with Henry Goodwin at the plate, Cline scored on a passed ball. Goodwin then ripped a single to shortstop and scored Cochran. Boswell scored as a result of an error on the same play. At that point, it was 3-0, Spartans. An RBI single from Gavin Bennett and a score from Clayton Morgan on a passed ball extended that lead to 5-0 after one.
The Spartans put five more on the board in the third inning. After Zion Detko scored on a passed ball, Clayton Morgan hit an RBI double, then Peyton DeHaven had an RBI groundout. The biggest play of the night came from the next batter when Cline hit a towering 2-run home run that scored Bennett as well.
On the mound, Goodwin pitched arguably his best game of the season. The senior did not allow a hit in four innings and struck out five. Rylee Wilson pitched a scoreless inning as well.
Goodwin went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI. Bennett (1-1, run, RBI), Morgan (1-2, 2 runs, RBI) and Cline (1-2, 2 runs, 2 RBIs).
The Spartans will take on Oak Hill on Wednesday, May 10. The Red Devils defeated Beckley in that sectional opener.
