Greenbrier West catcher Julia Herndon was made to play the position. Tough as nails, Herndon lets nothing keep her from playing the game she loves. She is still just a junior with another year left to continue to prove even more on the field. Herndon is hitting over .400 as the Lady Cavaliers look to reach their lofty goals over these last couple weeks of 2023.
What head coach Tony Hinkle said:
“Julia is a true catcher. She’s tough, strong, athletic, quick and handles the pitching staff nicely. She’s always honest with me on how the pitchers are throwing or how they warm up. She’s a hard worker, one of the best catchers around and a great teammate. She got cleated last year on a play at home and had to have stitches on her throwing hand. She was out for a week or so. I thought I was going to have to fight her to keep her out of the lineup. I’m sure glad we didn’t though because I would have probably lost.”

WVDN: How has your family impacted your career?
Herndon: My family has played a huge role in my softball journey. From when I first started in tee-ball, to now being a junior in high school. They’ve provided me with everything I need to be successful and have yet to miss a game. I appreciate them tremendously and wouldn’t be where I am without them.
WVDN: Being just a junior, what do you hope to accomplish in your last year of high school?
Herndon: I hope to maintain a high gpa and prepare myself academically for whatever degree/career I decide to pursue.
WVDN: Any plans yet after graduation?
Herndon: I’m not 100% set on what I want to do after graduation yet, but I’m considering getting an AAS in Cardiovascular Technology.
