SUMMERSVILLE, WV- After a short two game snide, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans got back in the win column on Wednesday, April 26 with an 11- 5 win over the Nicholas County Lady Grizzlies in Summersville.
East, who lost to Independence 10-2 the night prior, scored four runs in the second inning and four more in the sixth to pull away and move their record to 17-4 with just two regular season games remaining.
Nicholas took a quick 1-0 lead in the first, but the Spartans bats went to work soon thereafter. Olivia Plybon singled to lead off the second then Gracie Gumm followed with a double. Sophomore Jenna Groves then poked a 2-run single to right field that scored Plybon and Gumm, and the Spartans went ahead 2-1. East would add two more runs in the frame and led 4-1 afte one.
Plybon came back up in the third and hit a line drive to left field that cleared the fence for a solo
home run and East took a 5-1 lead on the catchers first dinger of the season.
The Grizzlies cut into the Spartan lead at 5-3 in the bottom half of the third, but East extended back it out to 6-3 in the fourth inning when Josi Ervin scored on a passed ball at home.
But Nicholas Co. Refused to go away, but a lot of that was helped by East. East committed two errors in the fifth that allowed the Grizzlies to come back within run one, 6-5 and it was a whole new ballgame.
That is, until the sixth.
Jo. Ervin opened with single, and Lindsey Black followed her with a double that brought Jo. Ervin home. Taylor Boswell reached in an error by the third baseman that scored Black, then Lily Carola brought Boswell home with an RBI single. Groves’ sac fly capped the scoring, and after six, East led 10-5.
Boswell was responsible for the last run of the game with an RBI base hit that scored Black, who had doubled in the seventh.
Jo. Ervin turned a great double play to end the night.
East had 15 hits on the night. Every player that batted, had at least one.
Gumm (3-4, run), Black (2-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Boswell (2-5, run, RBI), Plybon (2-4, 2 runs RBI) and Groves (2-4, run, 3 RBIs) all stood out at the plate.
East committed six errors in the field.
Carola got the start on the mound and went four innings and gave up two hits. She allowed four runs, but none were earned and had six strikeouts. Jo. Ervin tossed the final three innings and did not allow a run and struck out four.
Cambria Neal led the Grizzlies with two hits.
The Spartans head to Shady Spring tonight, April 27 for a battle with the Lady Tigers.
