James Edward Arbaugh, 86, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2017.
Born August 1, 1931, in the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia, he was the son of Glessie and Elmer Arbaugh.
Jim grew up in and around Lewisburg, WV, and it was there that he met his life-long love, Edith “Twinkle” Montgomery. He served in Korea in the U.S. Marine Corps and graduated from Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg. He studied at the School of Education at the University of Virginia and served as an athletic trainer after his football playing start was ended by a shoulder injury. Jim taught and coached at high schools in Powhatan, VA, and in Albemarle County, VA (Albemarle High School and later Western Albemarle High). After his retirement, he worked part time at UVA’s Birdwood Golf Course.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, John Montgomery VII.
Survivors include his wife; his four children, Michael Arbaugh, Linda Arbaugh Kinnahan and husband, Thomas, Fran Arbaugh, and Jim Arbaugh Jr. and wife, Lynne Nichols; granddaughter, Chloe Kinnahan, who brought him a special joy; his wife’s siblings, Herbert Montgomery and wife, Katy, Mary Lindquist and husband, Paul, and Joan Montgomery; Edith’s sister-in-law, Joyce Montgomery (wife of John); and 10 nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Jimmy.”
The family wishes to thank all friends and family who have helped in this passage, as well as the golden hearts at the Colonnades Reminiscence neighborhood and the angels of the Hospice of the Piedmont.
Visitation with the family will be held from 10 AM-12 PM on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Hill & Wood Funeral Home in Chalottesville, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jim’s name be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, VA 22901, and/or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlotteville, VA 22911, hopva.org.
