LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – Will they ever lose again?
The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans beat the Oak Hill Lady Devils 15-0 in three innings on Friday night, April 21, and extended their winning streak to 12 games, as their last loss was against Lincoln County on March 28.
Against the Red Devils, to put it simply, Oak did not belong on the same field as the Spartans.
East scored 14 runs, (yes 14!) in the first inning, batted around twice and just kept hitting.
To save space, and the tips of my typing fingers, let’s narrow down the first inning quickly.
The Red Devils went down 1-2-3 to open the game against Josi Ervin, who finished the contest striking out all but one batter she faced.
Ervin then doubled to lead off the bottom half of the first. Taylor Boswell singled her home two batters later, then Lily Carola ripped a double off the wall in center. Two consecutive walks led to a two-run single from Gracie Gumm. Jenna Groves, Hailey Ervin and Josi Ervin (again) then all had three straight RBI singles and at that point the Spartans were ahead 7-0. A little later, a three-run double from Alanis McClary made it 10-0, and a two-run home run from Gumm highlighted the Spartan offense.
Shew. It was total dominant effort by the Spartans (15-2).
Gumm was the star at the plate, although the Spartans had many play that role. Gumm was 2-3 with a home run, two runs scored and five RBIs. Josi Ervin (2-3, 2 runs, RBI) and Boswell (2-3, run, RBI) both had multiple hits.
Every Spartan that batted had at least one hit.
Josi Ervin pitched three innings, allowed no hits and struck out eight.
