FALLING ROCK, WV- The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans scored a huge victory on Wednesday night, April 19 when they went to Class AA’s no. 2 ranked team, Herbert Hoover and came back to Greenbrier County with a 5-1 victory in their pocket.
The Lady Huskies have won the last five AA state championships and have a good shot at making hat number six this season, so the Spartans 10th consecutive win was a big win.
Herbert Hoover scored first in the second inning when Kirstin Wehrle doubled to right field and eventually scored on an error by East. Hoover led 1-0 at that point.
However, the Spartans answered right back in the top of the third inning. Jenna Groves drew a walk to lead off, then Hailey Ervin singled left field. Josi Ervin then laid down a nice sacrifice bunt and moved both runners to second and third. After that, it was four straight singles to break the flood gates open. Lindsey Black, Taylor Boswell, Lily Carola and Alanis McClary were the hitters in that streak as the Spartans went up 4-1 after three innings.
Josi Ervin got in a groove from there and retired 12 of the next 14 batters before the Spartans offense struck one more time.
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Boswell doubled to center, and Carola doubled to right which scored Boswell and the Spartans got a big insurance run and went up 5-1.
Ervin gave up a single to Wehrle in the bottom half, but it was harmless, and East said goodnight to the defending champs.
The middle part of the order paced the East offensive attack. Black (2-4, run, RBI), Boswell (2-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) and Carola (2-4, RBI) all had multiple hits.
Ervin got the win. She pitched seven innings and surrendered only three hits, one unearned run and had seven strikeouts.
Hannah Shamblin took the loss for the Huskies (12-6) after lasting just 2.1 innings and giving up six runs (4 earned).
East moves to 14-2 on the season and will head back on the road on Thursday, April 20 to take on the Princeton Lady Tigers.
