MYRTLE BEACH, SC- The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans stayed red hot and won an extra inning game on Tuesday, April 4 in Myrtle Beach.

East defeated the Randolph (NY) Cardinals 7-5 after regaining a lead late in the contest.

After falling behind 1-0 early, the Spartans got to the third inning on a mission. Josi Ervin doubled and scored Ally Martin, then Taylor Boswell quickly got an RBI single to score Alanis McClary.

The Spartans (8-2) relinquished the lead in the bottom half when a wild pitch and a walk let Randolph take a 3-2 lead after three.

But the East deficit did not last long as Gracie Gumm and Jenna Groves stepped up in the fourth. Gumm knocked in Lilly Carola, who had gotten on base with a leadoff double, and Groves ripped a huge triple to score Gumm. But two batters later, Randolph pitcher Kendall Steward got a double play ball, but East led 4-3 at that point.

Steward helped herself out with an RBI triple in the fifth frame that knitted the score at 4-all and it stayed that way until the eighth inning. The Spartans picked up two unconventional runs and would hang on to win their second game on the trip.

Carola started for the Spartans and had a solid game. She gave up only one hit in four innings and struck out seven. She allowed just two earned runs but did walk four. Ervin relieved her in the fifth and gave up just two hits, one run and had six strikeouts.

Ervin, Carola and Gumm all had a pair of hits. Carola scored two runs and Gumm had two RBI’s.

East will hit the field tomorrow for their final game at the beach.
