LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – After a crushing loss to Lincoln County the night prior, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans rebounded in a big way with a much needed 6-2 victory over the George Washington Lady Patriots on Wednesday, March 29.

With the game tied at 2-all and with both teams not letting the other jump in front, things changed in the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Spartans got going and scored four runs on three hits and secured the win.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third. Taylor Boswell ripped a 1-out double to center then advanced to third base on an errant throw from the outfield. Lindsey Black then grounded out to second base, but she manufactured an important run, as Boswell scored on the play. At that point, it was 1-0, Spartans.

Two Spartan errors and a double by the Patriots’ Karalyne Wade gave GW a 2-1 lead in the fourth frame. With a runner at second, Josi Ervin got Ava Sitler to pop out and keep the damage limited as the score stayed the same.

Gracie Gumm singled to lead off the ensuing inning, and Jenna Groves ripped a shot to centerfield that brought Gumm all the way home from first. That hit tied the game at 2-all, and it would remain that until the bottom of the sixth when the Spartans took control.

With one away, Groves reached first base on an error, then Hailey Ervin singled to right field and advanced Groves to third. An intentional walk to Alanis McClary loaded the bases, then pitcher Josi Ervin decided to help her own cause at the plate, when she laced a 2-run double that put East up 4-2. Then Boswell had an RBI groundout. Black singled Ervin home to cap the Spartan scoring for the night.

Josi Ervin then got the final three outs without much harm and finished the game with seven innings pitched, four hits allowed, two unearned runs and six strikeouts. The Concord commit has now thrown 14 innings in the last two days.

Gumm and Boswell each had two hits. Josi Ervin and Black drove in two runs apiece, and Boswell and Groves drove in one each.

Alexis Adkins took the loss for GW. She lasted six innings, surrendered 10 hits and three earned runs.

With the win, East moves to 5-2 on the young season.
