Thelma I. Handley, 96, of Lewisburg, WV, passed away Monday, June 5, 2017, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, WV, after a short illness.
Thelma was born January 1, 1921, in Williamsburg, WV, the daughter of A.R. and Stella Myers Handley.
Thelma was a member of the Frankford Presbyterian Church. Formerly, she was a faithful member of Lacy Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, where she served as treasurer. She was also a member of AARP (National and Greenbrier Valley Chapter #671), the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and Humana Seniors Association.
Thelma was honorably discharged from the United States Army on October 23, 1946. She was a technician fourth grade, WAC Detachment 9940th, Technical Service Unit. She was a graduate of Ben Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
Thelma was a retired federal employee, having worked for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, MD.
She returned to Williamsburg after retirement to care for her mother and moved to Lewisburg following her mother’s death.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, C.A. Handley and E.H. Handley; sisters, Ruth H. Kelly and Kathleen H. Wareheim; niece, Kimberly Kelly; and nephew, Stephen Handley.
She is survived by nieces, Nancy K. Cunningham (Clifford) of Charleston, WV, and Carol H. Harris (Larry) of Lancaster, OH; nephews, Al Handley of Glen Burnie, MD, Jerry Wareheim (Monica) of Parkersburg, WV, and Keith Wareheim (Laura) of Huntington, WV;. and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
The family wishes to thank Rhonda Moore who has been a wonderful caregiver and friend to Thelma for the past 13 years; Dr. Lynn Smith for the outstanding medical care he provided for Thelma; Dr. Mary Ann Mann for the excellent care (including housecalls) she provided to Thelma’s beloved cats over the years; and Susan Sharp-Campbell, Thelma’s pastor, for her many visits and spiritual support.
A celebration of Thelma’s life will be officiated by Pastor Susan Sharp-Campbell on Thursday, June 8, 2017, at 2 PM at McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg. Interment will be in the Rosewood Cemetery.
Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday.
McCraw Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
