A big baseball opening weekend tournament was held at Hollowell Park this past weekend that featured the Eastern Greenbrier Rockies JV and varsity teams.

The JV Rockies beat Beckley-Stratton 7-1 in their first game and later in the day defeated Park Middle School 8-1.

The varsity Rockies lost to Trap Hill 7-3 on Sunday then suffered a close, yet tough, 5-4 loss to Shady Spring Middle later that day.

Nelson Lynch and Gideon McCutcheon each had two hits against Shady in the varsity contest.

Carter Huffman shined for the JV team on Saturday. He went 2-3 with three RBIs on the day.

Elijah Sherman pitched three innings and struck out eight batters against Beckley-Stratton, and Daniel Patrick-Seams picked up the win against Park.

Both days were well attended by fans and members of the community, as the league got its season underway.

John Lynch and Brian Griffith are the coaches for the varsity. Cam Huffman, Eric Dixon, Eric Workman and Jason DeHaven all team up to coach the JV.

Upcoming games for the JV are Wednesday, March 29 at Independence and Friday, March 31 at Trap Hill.

The varsity squad will be at Independence this Thursday, March 30, and then will head to Trap Hill on Friday, March 31.
