Calvin Hubert Nutter, 86, of Crawley, WV, died Thursday, March 12, 2015, at his home.
Born March 15, 1928, he was the youngest son of Layten and Ima Wickline Nutter.
He was a graduate of Williamsburg High School, Class of 1947. After farming for several years, he moved to northern Virginia, where he worked for Coca-Cola Company until his retirement in 1989. Taking “country roads” back home to West Virginia, he built his log cabin in Rader’s Valley. He was an active volunteer with the Williamsburg Fire Department, Williamsburg Rescue Squad, Community Action Group, and member of the Ruritans.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, highlighted with a trip to Alaska, where he went fishing for salmon and hunted moose. Watching any sports, especially the Mountaineers and Washington Redskins, was a favorite past time.
In the fall he enjoyed organizing the “Nutter Butters” for their annual applebutter making. At family reunions, he was known for his fish frying and homemade ice cream and was always ready to cook hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. He loved growing a garden and giving produce to family and friends.
He was an active member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Layten Nutter Jr.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 14 years, Arta B. Nutter of Crawley; special nieces, Linda Nutter of Williamsburg, WV, Brenda Austen of New Market, TN, and Pricilla Meredith (Tim) of Brunswick, GA; stepchildren, Avis Kesterson (Michael) of Salem, VA, and Beatrice Baldwin and Dwight Baldwin, both of Clintonville, WV; step-grandson, Stephen Kesterson (Brook) of Roanoke, VA; his designated cousin, chauffeur, and Lincoln Town Car-sitter, Caroline T. Martin (Don) of Lewisburg, WV; his every Sunday calling buddy, Jennings Shifflett (Lois) of Wycliff, OH; many other special cousins; six grandnieces; three great-grandnieces; 12 great-grandnephews; and numerous friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 15, 2015, at 2 PM at McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg with the Rev. Michael Tincher officiating. Burial followed in Rosewood Cemetery.
Visitation was on Saturday, March 14, from 6-8 PM the funeral home.
McCraw Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
