Jose “Pepe” Cayetano Fernandez was called home to the Lord on Friday, December 26, 2014.

He was born August 7, 1930, in Havana, Cuba, to Antonio Victorino and Maria Touzon Fernandez.

He became employed at The Greenbrier hotel in White Sulphur Springs, WV, in 1951 and retired from there after 50 plus years of service.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Some notable life experiences for Pepe include serving as an usher at Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church for over 50 years. He had worked with many national and international dignitaries, politicians, and business professionals. He was an avid golfer and even obtained recognition in Sports Illustrated for getting a hole-in-one on the par-3 18th hole at the Old White Golf Course. He received the Distinguished West Virginian Award by Governor Arch Moore.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pauline “Polly” Butler Fernandez; four children, Pepito Fernandez of Gainesville, VA, Donna Fernandez and husband, Craig Kaderavek, of Lebanon, VA, Marsha Fernandez and friend, Kevin Powell, of Frankford, WV, and Anthony Fernandez and wife, Michelle, of York SC; three grandchildren, Christina “Maria” Fernandez of Atlanta, GA, Nicholas Fernandez of Conway, SC, and Olivia Fernandez of York, SC; siblings, Manuel V. Fernandez and wife, Alma, of Northern Virginia and Gloria Dominguez and husband, Vincente, of Miami Lakes, FL; and two nephews with their families in Northern Virginia, Antonio Fernandez and Carlos Fernandez.

He lost a brother two years ago, Antonio I. Fernandez, whose wife, Teresa Touzon Fernandez, still lives in Northern Virginia.

Visitation will be from 6-8 PM on Friday, January 2, 2015, at Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs.

A funeral Mass will occur at 11 AM on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in White Sulphur Springs with a celebration of life occurring afterward.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to either the White Sulphur Springs Rescue Squad at P.O. Box 129, White Sulphur Springs, WV 24986, 304-536-4122, or the Catholic Charities of WV for White Sulphur Springs, 114 W. Main Street, White Sulphur Springs, WV 24986, 304-536-4177.

Shanklin Funeral Home is serving the family.
