The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services has identified 421-new cases of COVID-19, and confirmed the death of one additional resident due to complications of the virus in the last 24-hours; a 68-year-old Webster County woman.
In a message posted to the DHHR website, Cabinet Secretary Bill Crouch said, “As we solemnly observe this tragic loss of life, we must continue to fight this virus. It is our duty to protect our family members and neighbors. We extend our condolences to this family.”
As of Friday, February 26, 2,291 West Virginians have been lost to COVID-19.
Currently, there are 7,800 active cases throughout West Virginia. The daily positivity-rate is 3.99% and the cumulative positivity-rate is 5.48%. Thus far, 183,537 residents have been fully vaccinated against the virus, while another 285,654 are awaiting their second-dose.
With an infection rate of 12.13% and a percent positive of 4.03%, Pocahontas County has been upgraded to the gold designation on the DHHR daily color-coded County Alert System map. Greenbrier County has been upgraded to gold, as well. Numbers within the county have climbed since yesterday. The infection rate has spiked up to 20.61% and the percent positive has risen to 4.14%.
With an infection rate and percent positive of 12.38% and 2.34% respectively, Monroe County remains designated as green on the DHHR County Alert System map.
At present, 267 West Virginians are hospitalized with COVID-19, 62 of whom are being treated in area intensive care units and 33 who are receiving treatment through ventilators. The W.Va. DHHR reports that 121,143 residents who had previously been infected with the virus have since recovered.
