During his Monday, February 8, coronavirus response media-briefing, Governor Jim Justice announced that West Virginia, through the Federal Pharmacy Program, has partnered with Walgreens to begin utilizing the retail-chain in offering COVID-19 vaccinations to residents in select areas. Going forward, Walgreens will have the ability to provide vaccinations to those 65-years-of-age and older, as well as critical healthcare workers.
Under the terms of the partnership through the Federal Pharmacy Program, West Virginia will be allocated as many as 5,800 additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine per week.
“We keep trying, in every way, and we keep pleading with the federal government to get us more and more and more vaccines,” Justice said during the briefing. “This is another bump. The net of this whole thing is that we’re getting close to 6,000 additional doses per week, and that’s going to help us out a whole bunch.”
Justice also said that plans are being developed to include Walgreens into West Virginia’s new Everbridge digital vaccine pre-registration system
It should be noted that not all Walgreens Pharmacies will have the ability to offer vaccinations. Only select Walgreens locations across the state will have the vaccine available.
