The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports that 1,325 new cases of COVID-19 were identified, and 37 additional deaths occurred with the last 24 hours.
Among those confirmed deceased are a 79-year-old Kanawha County man, an 88-year-old Hardy County woman, a 76-year-old Fayette County woman, a 73-year-old Mason County woman, an 88-year-old Mason County man, a 70-year-old Cabell County man, an 86-year-old Hancock County man, an 80-year-old Hampshire County man, an 89-year-old Ohio County woman, a 94-year-old Ohio County woman, 47-year-old Wood County man, an 82-year-old Brooke County man, a 74-year-old Hampshire County woman, a 72-year-old Hancock County man, a 77-year-old Ohio County man, a 93-year-old Brooke County woman, a 74-year-old Marshall County woman, a 97-year-old Hancock County woman, a 72-year-old Greenbrier County man, a 79-year-old Hampshire County man, a 52-year-old Mercer County man, an 83-year-old Monongalia County man, a 79-year-old Upshur County man, an 88-year-old Brooke County woman, a 68-year-old Mason County man, an 83-year-old Barbour County man, a 36-year-old Monongalia County man, a 59-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 92-year-old Fayette County woman, an 81-year-old Nicholas County woman, a 63-year-old Ohio County woman, a 91-year-old Putnam County woman, an 84-year-old Ohio County man, a 46-year-old Wyoming County man, a 78-year-old Kanawha County woman, an 88-year-old Cabell County woman and a 65-year-old Barbour County man.
In a statement posted on the DHHR’s website, Cabinet Secretary Bill Crouch said, “ We are devastated to report these additional COVID-19 related deaths. Every life lost to this pandemic is a tragedy. Our thoughts go out to the families.”
As of Thursday, Jan. 7, 1,518 West Virginians have died due to complications stemming from COVID-19.
There were 17,608 laboratory COVID-19 tests performed on Wednesday, Jan. 6, yielding a 7.10% daily positivity-rate. The cumulative positivity-rate continues to rise, and has now reached 5.21%. West Virginia has received 109,440 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, 66,792 of which have been administered thus far.
At present, 789 West Virginians are hospitalized with COVID-19, 219 of whom are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, and 96 are being assisted with ventilators. The W.Va DHHR reports that 66,881 residents previously infected with the virus have now recovered.
